Audi TT Roadster

The Audi TT Roadster was added to the Audi lineup in 2001. Almost identical to the TT Coupe with the exception of the convertible top, the two models shared the same spirited 1.8 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine and the same distinctive chassis and sleek interior. Both the roadster and the coupe were also available with either front wheel drive or all wheel drive. With its bold styling cues and celebrated Audi reputation for safety and quality throughout, the TT Roadster provided a thrilling ride and performed well.

There have been a few upgrades throughout the years, with one of the most significant being the DSG transmission that became available in 2004. To this day, the DSG transmission system, renamed the S-tronic for 2008, is one of the best transmissions of its kind. The S-tronic 6 speed automated manual transmission is controlled via paddle shifters and provides rapid manual shifting with all the advantages of a fully automatic transmission.

For the 2008 model year, the Audi TT Roadster was redesigned, and although a bit larger, this ragtop is almost 200 pounds lighter due to the use of more aluminum in the body structure. The evolutionary original appearance has been maintained but enhanced with the new Audi single frame signature grille. Though real sports car enthusiasts will insist on rear wheel drive and frown at the TT Roadster's front or all wheel drive options, its responsive handling and quick steering combined with the power of the front wheel drive 2.0 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder or the all wheel drive 3.2 liter V6 engine still offer a very invigorating ride. The engine sizes correspond with the two available TT Roadster trims-the 2.0T and the 3.2 Quattro.

The soft fabric top is manually, yet easily, lowered and raised on the 2.0T Roadster while the 3.2 Quattro gets a power operated drop top. As is typical for a convertible, the back seat is extremely small and not highly recommended for neither adults nor small children for too long a period of time. The 2.0T features 17 inch alloy wheels with run flat tires, leather seating, and a CD player as part of the standard equipment list. The 3.2 Quattro comes standard with power operated and heated front seats and a CD changer. Several individual options and practically designed options packages are available for both models.

The 2.0T Roadster offers a lot of fun to drive characteristics and reliability. Although it is not as riveting as the 3.2 Quattro, it accelerates and handles very well. It is also about 20% more fuel efficient than the all wheel drive version. Regardless of which version, the Audi TT Roadster is designed to impress and to that end it has accomplished its purpose.
