Henrik Fisker, one-time head designer at Aston Martin, has announced plans to produce a new line of plug-in hybrids set to debut at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Working in partnership with Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc, Fisker plans a production volume of approximately 15,000 premium hybrids a year selling for less than $100,000.

Although precise details about the venture are somewhat unclear, Fisker said, "You don't have to drive a small, ugly car because you want to be environmentally correct." His plans are for automobiles that are "eco chic."

Currently Fisker works through Fisker Coachbuild LLC, an enterprise that has managed to deliver just 14 of its Fisker Tramonto models and is still in development on the first Fisker Latigo.

Quantum, however, is a known name in the world of alternative fuel development, having performed engineering projects for General Motors on products like the H2 Hummer and the Sequel.

Fisker did not reveal details about the type of battery to be used in the new Fisker-badged vehicles, but Quantum is a part owner in Advanced Lithium Power Inc. of Vancouver.

If that connection is utilized, the new Fiskers would utilize lithium ion batteries rather than the current nickel-metal hydride that is something of an industry standard.
