The first generation Audi A8 was introduced in Europe in 1994 and was produced until 2003. However, it was not until 1997 that automotive consumers in the United States were able to purchase the first generation A8. The vehicle was initially based on the Volkswagen D2 platform aluminum frame, which was the first of its type to significantly reduce overall weight, increasing gas mileage without sacrificing stability. The A8 quickly gained popularity among American drivers seeking a full-sized luxury car.
