With the recent commitment of Nissan to bring an electric car.com' class=a11 style='text-decoration:none' target=_blank>motor-car.com' class=a11 style='text-decoration:none' target=_blank>auto Stateside by 2010, the news comes today when the firm plans to begin mass producing lithium ion batteries next year, ahead of all the rivals. The carmaker's plans to call for the initial production numbers of 13,000 models, raising to 65,000 by 2011, said Automotive News.
The carmaker wants to release an electric car in Japan and the U.S by 2010, with Denmark and Israel getting it in 2011, plus world-wide sales by 2012. GM and Toyota are planning to bring their own plug-in lithium-ion-powered hybrids in 2010, having Toyota making this switch from nickel-metal hydride batteries that at the present uses on the Prius.
While Nissan's the first in announcing lithium ion batteries mass production in conjunction with the Automotive Energy Supply, while Toyota's seeking a Panasonic and GM collaboration with the A123Systems. Nissan batteries should offer an area up to 124 miles in a full charge, firm officials estimate.
