Higher US fuel taxes not so bad says Ford CEO

Alan Mulally Ford CEO has told Management Briefing Seminars reporters today that higher taxes of fuel would be a better alternative to raising Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) to reduce emissions and fuel usage. According to Mulally more efficient cars won’t really make consumers use less fuel. Being voted by the US government, the CAFE proposal would force carmakers to up their fleet average fuel economy to 35mpg for cars until 2020. Mulally explained in regards to the CAFE proposal “the numbers being talked about today are not technically possible” adding that a better solution is to tax fuel more at a higher rate, like they do in Europe where prices are up to $6 per gallon. We’d like to see how well that goes down with the American car public consumers. The CEO revealed at the same seminar, that Ford was close in return to profitability by early 2009 ignoring the declining sales prognosticated for the US, says Reuters. Just last year Ford lost $12.5 billion but things are really looking up now. Mulally’s 2009 claim doesn’t seem so far away, toughen by the company amazing profit announcement of $750 million in the second quarter.
