Audi will release a hybrid variant of its Q7 SUV at the end of this year. Co-developed by both Porsche and Volkswagen, the new hybrid is using a gasoline engine and an electric one that can be run independently on any power source or run in tandem. VW wants to start launching a similar system on its Touareg SUV in 2008 with Porsche`s hybrid Cayenne lurking by the end of this century.
Audi says the parallel hybrid system can be easily adapted to other models in its lineup. The Q7 hybrid has a 280 horsepower V6 3.2 liter and a 34kW electric motor – providing an extra 210 lb-ft of torque. By the end of this year a Q7 3.0 diesel is also expected to be launched.
