Daimler AG plans to mass build fuel cell vehicles in the next decade. Its first fuel cell vehicle — the Necar 1 — was showed back in 1994.
`By 2012 or 2015, we will be technologically well-advanced and in a position to produce cost-effective cars, comparable to those with other technologies` said Christian Mohrdieck – the director of fuel cell system development at Daimler.
Daimler has driven testing about 100 fuel cell autos over 2.23 million miles, according to Automotive News.
Hyundai has also plans for a fuel cell car in production, the time frame being 2012 – 2015 and GM is planning to launch first, coming into market as early as 2010. General Motors is already testing a few hydrogen-powered SUVs.
Daimler has a history of wrong fuel cell predictions; in 1990 the carmaker said cell car production would start in 2005, which was never realized, obviously.
