Continuing with its tradition of launching new vehicles, BMW launched the M6 in 1983. BMW took the engine of the M1 and the body of the 6 series and called the new born vehicle the M6. The BMW M6 was popular with the buyers for its outer style and good road speed. The M6 could be distinguished from the 6 series by the huge air outlets, and the liberal use of the M label on the car's body. The M6 was fitted with a S38 engine which could do 90 kilometers per hour in 6.4 seconds flat. When BMW stopped rolling out the M6 in 1989, 5855 of the vehicles were left on the European and North American roads.

The second generation M6 introduced in 2005, like its predecessor, was based on the 6 series. The engine, a V10, was the same as that of a M6. The new vehicle could do 100 kilometers per hour in 4.6 seconds. This was achieved using lightweight materials made of carbon fiber that have lightened the vehicle. The vehicle was available only in the coupe version.

In 2007 BMW brought out the M6 in the coupe and convertible formats. The new vehicle sports a 5.0 liter V 10 engine which can do 90 kilometers per hour in 4.6 seconds. The car can seat four passengers. The BMW M6 has 19 inch wheels, and in the front of the car it has two inlets for air flow. The interior of the car has also been paid attention to. It has leather seats that can be adjusted 12 different ways by the touch of a button. There's a new system to help the driver reach their destination, a stereo system with 13 speakers and windows that can be opened or shut by a seconds touch. Those wanting something more features can get a display system for the driver, the ability to start the car without a key and a high-end stereo system.
