The first BMW 7 Series car hit the market in 1977, replacing The M6 series of cars. The car when introduced was only available as a sedan and was powered by The M30 engine which had 6 cylinders. The 6 series became popular for its latest features. The car had a system which showed the driver when its next servicing was due and a system to alert the driver if there were any errors in the car. The early vehicles were loaded with a car computer and anti-lock braking systems that in the beginning were optional, but later became a common feature of the car. The first generation 7 Series was replaced by a second generation in 1986. The second generation was powered by a V 12 engine, and had facilities on board the car to make and receive calls and faxes and a fridge to cool wine bottles. The car was provided with a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour. The was also an L version which was longer, to give the passengers seated in the back a little more room to stretch their legs.

The third generation came into the market in 1994. The car had different models for The European and American markets. While in Europe it had seven versions, in America it had three versions. The versions were powered by a 4.0, 4.5 liter or 5.4 liter engine in Europe, whereas in America it was powered by a 4.4 liter or V12 engine. The car was equipped with headlights that were powered by xenon and on the same level as oncoming traffic, audio system that had 14 speakers and 4 sub woofers, and a 6 CD player. The car temperature settings could be changed by both driver and passenger. The cars safety belts could be adjusted according to the height of the passenger.

The latest generation of The 7 Series was introduced in the market in 2002. The car is available in three different versions, the standard sized 750i and the long sized 750Li and the 760Li. The 750Ii and The 750 Li are powered by a 4.8 liter V8 engine, which have 18 inch tires, temperature settings in the car can be changed or modified by the driver or passenger, leather seats and front seats that can be moved or adjusted in 16 different ways. The 760Li is powered by a V12 engine and has almost the same options as the other 7 Series cars. The 760 Li a keyless entry, and a music system for the rear passengers. The BMW 7 Series recently unveiled its offering, the BMW Hydrogen, as its offering in the alternative fuel category.
