AutoWeek reports that Robert Lutz 鈥� GM Vice-Chairman says the company will be facing a `massive restructuring` in the product plans; this if the 35 mpg economy of fuel standard (passed yesterday in the House of Representatives) becomes law.
鈥淭he minute we have confirmation of the 35-mpg rule, that is the point where we go through all of our forward product plans and probably introduce, frankly, massive restructuring of the product plan鈥� he affirmed.
鈥淲e will have to take a look at everything because we鈥檙e going to have to come up with a plan which gets us to 2015, 2017, gets us part of the way there, and with clarity on how we鈥檙e going to get the rest. Then we will have to start raising prices as we introduce the new technology鈥� he added.
鈥淚 think one of the reasons that everybody said, 鈥榊eah, yeah, we鈥檙e in agreement with this,鈥� is because anything, even a horrible alternative, is better than the constant uncertainty鈥� said Lutz.
