McLaren binds Lewis Hamilton to this team at least until 2012, inking a $138 US million deal with this British youngster. The British magazine News of the World says Hamilton, who on Monday turns 23, will make the average of over $27 million per season in the next five years, despite the fact he makes just $700,000 and some points bonuses racing to second place in 2007 at the drivers` championship.
The newspaper claims the McLaren driver`s usual 2008 salary will be of $17m, plus $6m if he will spearhead the Mercedes-powered teams`s first title since 1999 with Mika Hakkinen.
“I’ve always said I’m happy to stay at McLaren for the rest of my career if they want me to,” said Hamilton, who moved recently to Switzerland for tax and personal purposes.
“I have a great relationship with the team having been with them for so long, right from my days in karting, and I’m ready to lead them on the track this year”.
“My relationship with the team only grew stronger last year with all that happened off the track and the way they supported me in the final races” he continued.
