Subaru takes on Smart

The R1e concept got the production go ahead from the Subaru bosses. This company is famous for the turbocharged rally autos, but the electric R1e has been for years under development and originally it appeared in 2003.

A petrol vehicle wearing the badge of R1 is on sale already in Japan with a 660cc engine, and this `e` appeared last year at the Geneva Motor Show. It uses some electric motor plus lithium-ion batteries, giving a zero-emission area of 50 miles having a 60mph maximum speed. It`s likely to be on sale in the upcoming year.
