In an interview taken this week at the Detroit Auto Show, CEO Martin Winterkorn claimed that Volkswagen is strongly considering to start selling its Polo hatchback model in the U.S.. Later, probably at the end of January, he will meet with more than 600 U.S. dealers and the simple question that he will ask is "Do Americans need the Polo?". Taking into consideration that the Polo, which is smaller than the Rabbit hatchback, will be offered in GTI guise, it may be that this will represent quite a success on the American market. Concerns over fuel economy is an important factor because due to this, Americans renewed their interest in such small cars even though for a long period of time, these stayed in the shadow.
Moreover, in an interview with Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper, Winterkorn stated that VW is taking into consideration to also bring to the U.S. market the rear-engine Space Up concept car.
