On the 30th of November 2007, the winners to last year Michelin Challenge Design were announced at Detroit's historic Scarab Club. A total of six awards along with an invitation to display their winning designs in a special Michelin exhibit at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in January 2008 were given by Michelin in this one-of-a-kind creative show. The aim of this annual design challenge is to promote creative thinking and innovative, bald ideas.
The competition tries to create a deeper and closer relationship with the design community and in the same time to bring out brilliant ideas that can create vehicles that customers want to buy and enjoy driving. The challenge is open to designers all around the world, individuals, small and large companies and it gives the chance to display significant, innovative design work that, normally, does not have the opportunity to appear in any major auto show. The Michelin Challenge Design in January 2008 at the NAIAS will present vehicles and vehicle design concepts based on the specific purpose to make smaller vehicles safer particularly in urban environments. Even though the interest for small vehicles increased due to the environmental concerns, urban congestion and rising energy costs, the customers still prefer large cars mainly due to safety reasons. In addition, the competition focuses on those design concepts that bring out a sense of security in small vehicles.
Damien Michelin commented that "the Michelin family and our business have celebrated ideas, vision, and innovation for 120 years. Today we join the CCS faculty and our judging panel to celebrate the work, ideas and vision demonstrated by the CCS Class of 2008 and support their decision to pursue a career in transportation and industrial design." The judges for the event were Ehab Kaoud, Aram Kasparian and Andy Fulford from the design studios at Ford along with Michelin North America's Damien Michelin and Jim Anderson and also Brandon Faurote from Chrysler Design.
First-place winner was awarded 1,250 $ scholarship while second place received 1,000 $ scholarship and the winner on the third place was awarded a 750 $ scholarship. Moreover, Michelin made a donation of 22,000 $ to the school Carl Olsen Scholarship fund and also provides financial help to the CCS students.
