Two days ago, Toyota Chief Katsuaki Watanabe, announced that there are plans that two new hybrids will hit the market in 2009. Regarding this matter, Watanable told reporters that “Next year here in Detroit, we will expand our conventional hybrid line-up by staging world premiers of two all-new, dedicated hybrids, one for Toyota and one for Lexus." These new cars will be conventional hybrids, similar to the current Prius, in which an electric motor works in tandem with an internal combustion petrol engine.
However, customers have to wait until, at least, 2010 to see the first pug-in hybrid from Toyota hit the road. Watanabe also mentioned that by the end of 2010, Toyota will deliver a “significant fleet” of plug-in hybrids powered by lithium-ion batteries,as declared by Automotive News. Even though, in first instance, it was claimed that the lithium-ion technology was too dangerous for use in hybrid vehicles, Toyota is continuously developing the work on the advanced battery system.
