GM has found apparently the best solution for improving the fuel economy: small engines featuring turbochargers. Starting with 2009, the company will be introducing a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine for the small U.S. autos. First in using this engine are Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Astra. The same engine could be put to use for the mid-sized cars, too.
`You`re going to see turbocharged four-cylinders in vehicles that no one could have ever imagined that they would be in` said Jim Queen – the engineering chief at GM.
Queen didn`t indicate where would the engines be made or predict their economy of fuel.
The Cobalt 2008 powered by the 2.2-liter engine is getting 33 mpg highway and 24 city. So, the smallest GM model in the U.S. is the Korean-made Chevrolet Aveo, powered by a 1.6-liter. The Saturn Astra runs with a 1.8-liter engine.
Turbochargers could be costing GM $200 to $450 per auto depending on the sophistication of the system, said Jim Hall, the director of industry analysis at 2953 Analytics - suburban Detroit.
