Besides the backed hydrogen, BMW has been considering also other alternatives as the power source of the future such as electric cars and petrol-electric hybrids. Moreover, BMW has already revealed its Hydrogen 7 limo and X6 Efficient Dynamis hybrid concept- in spite of all these alternatives, the company is also investigating electric powertrains among the clean-energy technology division. However, as Jochen Schmalholz commented for Drive, the hydrogen fuelled cars will not hit the market constantly until 2023-2030 and this is not due to technology issues, but due to the lack of infrastructure. At the moment, there are just five liquid-hydroegn refuelling stations in the world, four in Germany and one in the U.S.A- this fact shall represent the biggest obstacle to the hydrigen car, as Schmalholz further explained.
In the meantime, the only available solution for the present is to switch to electric cars. BMW has already started to work on the development of such a vehicle, but there are no production plans in place yet. He said that 鈥濿e will only bring this if it makes sense. At the moment we are not really convinced it will work for BMW. But if it makes commercial sense and it makes sense to our customers, then we will do it.鈥�
