BMW reached an important milestone yesterday, making its 5,000,000th 5-series at its Dingolfing factory. The Carbon Black Metallic was the 5,000,000th 5-series — although it appears blue in the photo — 530d sedan.
The original E12 1972 5-series has the base on the 1970 Garmisch 2002ti BMW concept, designed by Marcello Gandini and presented during the Geneva Motor Show.
The fifth-generation of 5-series has come long way since the first-generation`s area of four plus six-cylinder engines. While the top engine offered on the E12 5-series was a six-cylinder 218 horsepower, the present E60 auto can be equipped with a V10 500 horsepower.
