Some years ago, owning a matte paint car was not a thing to be proud of nor a trend in the auto-market, but it seems that recently the shine-free surface feature is making its way on the most wanted things in a vehicle and little by little, it is setting a trend on the market. One of the most relevant examples is the wonderful Lamborghini Reventon, which brought on a matte grey-paint scheme similar to a jet-fighter.
However, at last month’s Detroit Auto Show spectators could see at least eight cars which featured such a paintjob, once again with Lamborghini bringing on such a model, the Gallardo Spyder. Along with Lamborghini, there were also a couple of concept cars covered in the same matte painting from GM, Mercedes and Chrysler. In the next two-three years, as Dupont Automotive color technology manager Karen Surcina told the Associated Press, matte finishes on specialty or limited-run vehicles would be available.
On one hand, carmakers are quite fond of the ideea because this way the pure design of a vehicle can be put better into light, accentuating most of its lines and cues, but on the other hand, it could be quite difficult when it comes to maintenance. As Surcina further commented, “every time you take it through the car wash, the buffers are starting to buff it back up and it starts to get shiny there. It’s easy to paint, but it’s not easy to keep it matte.” Despite this, the matte painted vehicles represent a new challenge for the customers to be different and come up with something exclusive and a new competition among the carmakers for the best and cleanest line design.
