Several years ago, back in the beginning of 2006, the world of cars was somehow different than it is today- consumers worldwide were not so much focused on 鈥瀏reen vehicles鈥� and moreover, the rear-wheel drive was mostly a plan for the future to come- since then, we can easilt see that a lot has changed and was seemed quite impossible then, it is now more than ever, close to being reality. Take for example, the Camaro concept from Chevrolet launched in the very beginning of 2006- in comparison to that model, the 2009 Camaro appears to be quite flexible to changes and even manages to fullfil the new conditions of the cars market.
The new version tries to combine the terms of 鈥瀎uel-efficient鈥� and 鈥瀖uscle-car鈥� -words that, so far, were mutually exclusive. As some profile sources, like TheCarConnection.com say, General Motors is planning to apply the automaker鈥檚 dual-mode hybrid system to the Camaro and even hired a special team of engineers for this project. However, the source did not reveal which powerplant was being coupled to the hybrid system, but most probably (mostly due to the added cost of extra drivetrain), it will be a V8 engine.
Due to the fact that GM scrapped its rear-drive car plans, it can not spread the cost of producing the Zeta platform over several models so therefore, the price of the V8-powered Camaro will probably be substantially higher than first thought. However, GM decided not to produce a rear-wheel drive Chevy Impala or Buick model, but the Pontiac G8 and the new Camaro are still in plan as first said due to the advanced phases of construction these vehicles are in. Worth mentioning that Cadillas will still use the rear-wheel drive in order to compete with the very high-standard models on the market.
