Last month, at the Detroit Auto Show, there were a series of surprizes prepared for the audience, among which we can name the presentation by Fisker of the 2009 Karma luxury plug-in hybrid sedan, which is to enter production line quite soon and be launched somewhere next year. The promise made by a small coachbuilder comes as a shock for the fans and not only, as the carmaker promises to deliver such a plug-in hybrid vehicle at least one year before the other great competitors such as Toyota or GM. It seems that besides the two-door vehicle, there will also be a four-seat convertible model to be launched by Fisker.
As Automotive News reports, the news was made public by Fisker founder Henrik Fisker, who recenltly spoke at a J.D. Power event where he showed the crowd a picture of a car with the label ‘top secret’ marked across it. The plans that Fisker has for the near future are more than ambitious: he plans not only to become a fully fledged carmaker (at present, the lineup features just re-made Mercedes models and BMWs), but also to extend on the European market for the first time next year and the plans do not stop here.
The up-coming plug-in hybrid powertrain features a petrol engine turning a generator to top up the car’s lithium-ion battery pack, which in turn power an electric motor driving the wheels- the powertrain was developed by anither company, Quantum Technologies. The coachbuilder promises a top speed of 125mph and a drive of 50 miles on a single charge only; the 0-60mph sprint will be done, after his sayings, in just 6 seconds. We will have to wait and see if all these plans will be brought to live as soon as Fisker claims.
