Ford has annouced this week at the Chicago Auto Show that there are serious plans to import their Transit Connect van to North America and Ford's Mark Fields, President of the Americas further commented that the van will hit the American market on the early summer of 2009. The Transit Connect has been available on the European market since 2003 and it ic deisigned to create a new commercial car niche for the North American market, where spacious, large vans like the already famous Ford E-series made history for decades.
Even though the European-specification vehicles on display in Chicago featured diesel engines and a five-speed manual transmission, the American version will feature a 2.0 liter Duratec four cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. With a 40 percent increase over the full size vans, the cylinder/automatic combination is estimated to return 19 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway.
Additional features that Ford mentioned it will distinguish the van on the market are important details like two sliding side doors, vertical 180-degree-opening "barn door" cargo doors, a low floor and high ceiling. The vehicle will offer 155 cubic feet of cargo space and one could fit in items up to 5 feet wide and 6.5 feet long; the model will be available with a 270 degree hinge.
