Hamilton incident story brought Spain and England at war

The scandal which involved a racism act from the Spanish spectators on McLaren racer, Lewis Hamilton, last week at the F1 test in Barcelona, has come to an even more higher level, throwing Britain and Spanish into a media war, as both accuse the other part of bringing the most considerable prejudices. For example, The Sun, very important English tabloid, claimed that “The Spanish media all but ignored the controversy over Hamilton’s treatment in Barcelona,” in an article in which also appeared photos of spectators at the Circuit de Catalunya wearing black makeup and wigs. In the same regard, the Times accused the Spanish media of intentionally ignoring the importance of the incident.
On the other hand, the most important Spanish newspapers actually condemned severely the abuse made on the F1’s racer, at same time with Spain’s motor sports authority and the Spanish grand prix venue. El Mundo commented that Montmelo had been the scene of an “embarrassing spectacle” for Spain which do not make them proud and moreover, La Vanguardia said that there should be a “zero tolerance” attitude to racist “lunatics”. Despite the news brought by the Spanish media, England’s The Independent mentioned “It’s pretty clear that they are decades behind Britain when it comes to attitudes towards race,” and also that this particular incident unveiled an underlying racist element to modern Spanish culture. Another magazine in England, the Daily Telegraph said that “there is something seriously wrong with their authorities who have not taught the masses that such behaviour is unacceptable. This may be because the authorities do not see such behaviour as unacceptable.”
A reporter from Diario AS commented that the British press is generalising the incident, acusing all Spanish people of racism, when actually this is not the case as what was the behavious of a dozen Spaniards at the weekend should remain the behaviour of 12 people, and not millions. The reporter further said that “Generalisation is a dangerous habit, which often leads to wrong conclusions and is almost always unfair. Especially because an uncontrolled individual can cause tremendous prejudice against a whole group, as we are used to seeing at many sporting events.”
In another article from the same newspaper, it was claimed that the unfortunate incident has turned into a “disproportionate snowball” in the press, and named the “English press” as having overall named the Spanish sports fans as “racist because of a few isolated” persons who were punished accordingly. In the final words, the reporter stated that “To say we are a racist country is an exaggeration. There were many more people who took happy photos with Hamilton. The history of Spanish sport is full of examples such as these and a few individuals will not spoil this for us.”
