BMW announced that it will debut its new ConnectedDrive technology at Geneva Motor Show next month. ConnectedDrive will allow all the BMW buyers to access the whole internet via the auto`s iDrive and center mounted LCD screen. So, initially, ConnectedDrive will be available in Europe only.
The ConnectedDrive will be provided by the Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution technology (EDGE), which is exactly the same service that Apple is using to connect its iPhone to internet. Transfer speeds will probably be just slower than the 3G — which is the speed that`s on the most wireless cards.
ConnectedDrive will be accessible only at speeds slower than 5km/hr, for safety reasons. However, cars equipped with the BMW rear-seat DVD player will be allowing rear-seat passengers to connect to the network at any speed.
Although this technology will not be offered initially in BMW`s U.S. autos, the option should make it right to our shores in the upcoming years.
