BMW announced Tuesday a new Project i model that will be working independently of BMW plus whose mission it will produce low-emission city autos, similar to Smart Fortwo. Norbert Reithofer, the BMW CEO, said the Project i will be dealing with meeting the strict emissions requirements for allowing its vehicles free access in busy cities and towns, like the downtown core in UK, London. Reithofer says a fourth brand name could be in the cards now, if that product doesn’t fit properly under any of current brands from BMW. This could very well be leading to a revival of the Isetta.
“We must define what type of vehicles we will produce then we will ask the question if those concepts fit better with the BMW brand, the Mini brand or a sub brand within those two,” said Reithofer. “If none of these options are possible then perhaps we will have a fourth brand”. Project i is now expected to make a city auto early in the next decade, with the decision on whether or not BMW will make an electric vehicle for the United States market coming in the current year, this according to Auto Motor und Sport.
BMW sold 1,400 autos last year in India, and wants to raise that number up to 3,000 this year, standing to reason an-all new micro-auto would enter on new markets, like in India, where it would be some costlier alternative to the Nano by Tata.
