With the likes of the 1-series from BMW's and A3 from Audi dominating that premium small auto department, Mercedes-Benz has decided finally to get serious in create a real contender for that segment. Expected to be launched by 2011, Mercedes given the go ahead to the project of revamp completely its A and B-Class autos.
According to AutoCar, Dr. Dieter Zetsche – the head of Mercedes-Benz has given finally the green light for the plans to see the A-Class model turned into a 1-series fighter unit and the B-Class transformed to a serious competitor for the future X1 small SUV.
The new A-Class unit— which is expected to be named the CLA — could now spawn three diverse body types, but initially will be debuted as a coupe. Mercedes decided to be a two-door coupe, not a three-door hatchback — like the CLC auto– to give the vehicle a more upscale feeling. Mercedes expect the CLA (in the long run) — which will cost around £19,000 — to replace eventually the CLC model.
Mercedes hopes boosting its premium small auto sales to over 280,000 by the early next decade, a goal the all-new A and B-Class autos should help the German carmaker attain.
