John Herlitz, former Senior Design Vice President of Chrysler, dies at 65

John Herlitz, the former Senior Design Vice President of Chrysler, died at the beginning of this week at the age 65. John Herlitz — who joined Chrysler from GM in 1965 — worked his way up quickly on the design ladder at Chrysler. He was named, in 1968, Plymouth styling studio manager and then when he retired in 2000 from Chrysler, he climbed all the way up to being the design senior vice president.
Herlitz was very well known for designing the Plymouth Barracuda 1970 and Plymouth Road Runner 1971. Herlitz designed also the Barracuda Formula SX concept auto — which created the foundation for the amazing 1967-69 vehicle — but Herlitz was now called away for the National Guard duty right before Plymouth brought the auto to reality.
One of most recent designs of Herlitz was the Dodge Copperhead, debuted at the Detroit International Auto Show in 1997.
"During his 35-year career history at Chrysler, John made a significant impact on Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Plymouth vehicles' design," Trevor Creed, the Chrysler senior vice president at design, affirmed in a statement. "He had a heartfelt passion for the automotive industry and he will be greatly missed".
