Hyundai announced that the 2008 unit year will be the last one for the sporty Hyundai Tiburon two-door hatchback model. John Krafcik, the product development vice president at Hyundai Motor America, says the Tiburon unit will be produced until the all-new rear-wheel-drive Genesis coupe goes next spring on sale. He says the Genesis coupe model is not a replacement for this front-wheel-drive Tiburon.
"We are seriously looking at a small front-wheel-drive coupe to replace the Tiburon, but I can鈥檛 say when that will happen," Krafcik affirmed.
Krafcik said this replacement likely would be quite similar to the Veloster coupe concept that was first shown in April 2007 at the Seoul auto show. The fwd Veloster coupe model was powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine plus a five-speed manual transmission.
Hyundai introduced the Tiburon unit to the United States in the 1997 unit year to spiff up its look as a econobox brand. The second generation was introduced for the 2003 model year having a base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 138 hp and 136 pounds-feet of torque. The V-6 comes basic on the GT trim producing 172 hp.
Through these first three months of this year, the Tiburon U.S. sales were down 28.7 percent to 2,071 models.
