First rumors said that the Audi S4 2010 would share the powertrain with the S5. But these rumors are incorrect as the S4 2010 will be powered by a brand new forced-induction 3.0-liter V-6 generating something close to 340 hp.
The reason’s quite simple: fuel economy. The strategy’s to deliver comparable or upgraded overall performance, toeing the line on weight, maintaining power output by using the forced induction on some smaller displacement engine. So, doing so will be boosting a manual transmission S4’s economy of fuel on the European cycle up to 23.3 mpg compared with just 19.4 mpg for the V-8 S5. That is an efficiency 20% gain.
A less strong, 290-hp, 310 lb-ft variant of the engine will be now the base offering on the A6 Quattro, replacing that 3.2-liter V-6. Known as the TFSI, which in the past it has been Audi’s internal moniker for the four-cylinder turbos, the all-new engine may be referred as the 3.0T in the unit name, possibly indicating twin-charged system that uses both supercharger and turbocharger. While Volkswagen features a “twincharger,” Audi has not offered such a system yet. At the very least, it’s expected the new V-6 model to be supercharged, although what will be allowing the S4’s variant to generate 50 or so more horsepower’s still a mystery. Audi will be introducing the 2010 S4 this autumn, probably at the Auto Show in Los Angeles.
