GMC Sierra Classic Hybrid

The line of GMC full size pickup trucks is decades old, yet as of 2005 the GMC Sierra Classic Hybrid is brand new. Complimenting the highly regarded line of pickups, this hybrid model is designed to haul, tow and comfortably transport as well as save money on ever escalating fuel costs while helping to contribute to a cleaner environment.

The hybrid version of the long standing line of GMC trucks is relatively mild in comparison to hybrid engines offered by other manufacturers for other vehicles but is available on both two wheel drive and four wheel drive models. Initially made available only in Florida and the Western United States as a test market, the Sierra Classic Hybrid was available all across the country with the introduction of the 2006 model year.

Available in either two wheel drive or four wheel drive, the hybrid system employs three fuel cost saving methods. The hybrid system kicks in to shut down the engine when it is idling-which can result in a tremendous cost savings for 8+ hour work trucks that often sit idling at job sites for longer periods of time. A regenerative braking mechanism reduces the speed of a vehicle by converting a portion of the kinetic energy produced into electrical energy to be stored for future use. In this hybrid truck, the electrical energy is stored is stored in one of the three 14 volt batteries that are protected and stored underneath the rear seats. A deceleration fuel cut off device prohibits the flow of gasoline to the carburetor and injectors should the truck decelerate rapidly, such as in the event of an accident, and can prevent explosion or fire. The hybrid system in the Sierra Classic Hybrid also uses electrical power to operate power accessories.

For the 2007 model year, the GMC Sierra Classic Hybrid technology is joined by active fuel management to further increase fuel savings and decrease overall operational costs while maintaining the power, comfort and convenience necessary to satisfy the needs of those who need a fuel efficient, environmentally friendly full size pick up truck.
