This Korean automotive manufacturer is a relative newcomer to the American marketplace. Hyundai has consistently offered affordably priced vehicles with an impressive list of features and one of the industries best warranties, such as the midsize Hyundai Sonata sedan.

The Sonata debuted for the 1989 model year. Its economical price range should have made a bigger splash in the crowded midsize sedan market, yet an unrefined style, lackluster powertrain and a less than notable build quality did little to impress American consumers. The second generation was introduced in 1995, boasting higher quality materials, dual airbags for safety and a more sophisticated fit and finish-but still lacked the engine refinement and power typical for its class. The 1997 Sonata arrived with a more likable and sleek exterior design, but it was in 1999 that the Sonata finally became a serious contender in the midsize marketplace. This generation, which was manufactured from 1999 throughout the 2005 model year, sported much more powerful engines and a much smoother, quieter ride. In 2002 the Hyundai Sonata was refreshed with a fancy new chrome grille as well as redesigned headlights and tail lights. The engine, too, was upgraded to a 2.7 liter V6, resulting in an increase in horsepower. However, although this generation was a more desirable midsize sedan, those Sonatas produced prior to the 2006 version are no where near as refined as the 2006 through 2008 model year, which are representative of the best Sonatas ever.

Undercutting the competition in price, the current Hyundai Sonata offers a spacious rear seat, abundant headroom and a large trunk. The more refined interior features a two tone dashboard and appropriate, but not too flashy metallic trim. Bargain hunters will be thrilled with the standard equipment and 4 door practicality. The Sonata GL, GLS and LX all come with a lengthy list of standard features that include air conditioning, a CD/MP3 player, power accessories, cruise control and keyless entry. The list of standard features is longer on the mid-grade GLS, while the leather-lined LX has enough extras to feel very luxurious. Their 162 horsepower, 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engines can be paired with either a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission with manual override. Optional on the GLS and standard on the LX is a 3.5-liter, 235-hp V6 matched to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability. Both engines are reasonably fuel-efficient and very quiet. The Sonata might not be sporty, but the steering is responsive and the suspension is poised.

Overall, the Hyundai Sonata is a comfortable and likable midsize sedan that emphasizes Hyundai's ability to build cars that are easy on the budget and easy to live with as well. Like most vehicles in the midsize sedan class, the Sonata offers front-wheel drive, numerous safety features and a choice of four-cylinder or V6 engines. However, the Sonata is set apart by its outstanding warranty coverage.
