The Mitsubishi Lancer compact sedan debuted for the 2002 model year as the replacement for the Mitsubishi Mirage. There was initially very little to distinguish this vehicle from the many others in the fairly crowded and affordably priced compact sedan marketplace. Three trim levels were offered to accommodate the three common economy car shopper personalities - those shopping for the lowest price with the most options, those who appreciate characteristically sporty features and those who desire a little more luxury. All models were powered by the same 2.0 liter engine that delivered a respectable 120 horsepower.

Sales of the Lancer were not astounding in its first couple of years and it took the arrival of the Lancer Ralliart and Sportback models in 2004 to peak consumer interest. Suddenly this small sedan was no longer lethargic in performance or appearance. The 2.4 liter inline 4 cylinder engine produced 162 horsepower was peppy and allowed for swift acceleration. Both the Ralliart and the Sportback had a roomy interior and an attractive sport oriented design that included striking white face gauges, rear spoilers, sport seats and 16" alloy wheels. A stiffer suspension and finely tuned exhaust system contributed to the nimble handling and fun to drive factor.

For the 2006 model year, the Lancer received a revised exterior that included a new front and rear fascia and a sporty black mesh grille enhances the sport trim models. Further enhancing the athletic image are new exterior lights and redesigned wheels. The interior was also outfitted with a dark titanium steering wheel while aluminum accents highlight the pedals and shift knobs. A redesigned Lancer is expected for the 2008 model year, but in the meantime those who are seeking a sport themed and reliable compact sedan would be wise to take a look at the Mitsubishi Lancer.
