Suzuki Reno

The Suzuki Reno compact 5 door hatchback was introduced for the 2005 model year. The Reno shares the same platform as the Suzuki Forenza but the Reno provided more functional utility, primarily due to the hatchback styling, and had a more youthful appearance both inside and out. Although not especially refined, unique or exciting, it was well equipped, comfortable and affordable.

When the front wheel drive Reno was introduced it was available as an S, LX or EX trim model, all of which shared the same 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder engine that was capable of 127 horsepower. Popular with do-it-yourself performance geeks, adding a turbocharger boosted the Reno's meager 127hp to 200hp. The S and LX both came standard with a 5 speed manual transmission, while the EX was equipped with a 4 speed automatic. The standard equipment for the base S model was quite plentiful and included power windows and door locks, heated and power operated side mirrors, a 6 speaker stereo system with steering wheel mounted controls, air conditioning and 60/40 split folding rear seat. The LX adds to these features with 15 inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a power operated sunroof, cruise control and a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob. The top of the line EX takes it one step further and includes leather upholstery.

For the 2006 model year the Reno received some additions to the list of standard equipment that included freshly designed wheels, a tilt steering wheel and a higher quality seat fabric. The trim level names were dropped and replaced with a Base model that was available as is, with a Convenience Option Package and with a Premium Option package. The features on the Base model are slightly greater than the S model from the previous year but replace the stereo system with an 8 speaker system without steering wheel mounted audio controls. The Convenience Package gives back the steering wheel mounted audio controls and adds a sunroof, keyless entry, cruise control and leather wrapped steering wheel. The Premium package adds leather seats, alloy wheels, antilock brakes and a rear spoiler. The only significant change for the 2007 model year was the addition of a tire pressure monitoring system to the standard equipment list for all models.

Although there is nothing earth shattering about the Suzuki Reno, it does cost considerably less than comparable hatchbacks and wagons and offers a reliable, comfortable and roomy mode of transportation.
