The 2008 Suzuki SX4 is clearly the best compact economy car Suzuki has to offer this year. It is available as a Sport Sedan and Hatchback. The Hatchback version is the least expensive all wheel drive vehicle on the market today. The Sport Sedan is new to the SX4 lineup this year and differentiates itself from the Hatchback with a specially tuned suspension and an aerodynamically designed body kit. The Hatchback features standard all wheel drive and the Sedan and Sport Sedan are both front wheel drive. All models have an extraordinary amount of head room and tall drivers and passengers will certainly appreciate this feature not ordinarily found in a compact car. Although the engine is more powerful than other vehicles in this category, such as Toyota Matrix, acceleration power suffers due to the heavier weight of the vehicle, especially when equipped with the automatic transmission, and going from 0-60 takes an unremarkable 11.3 seconds.

The SX4 Hatchback features 16 inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, full power accessories, air-conditioning and a CD/MP3 player. The SX4 sedan comes with 17 inch alloy wheels, a sporty lower body kit and a more firmly tuned suspension. There are two option packages that can be added to both the Sedan and the Hatchback. The Convenience Package includes a leather wrapped steering wheel with audio system controls and cruise control. The Touring Package adds heated side view mirrors, a combination SmartPass keyless entry and engine start system and an upgraded audio system with 9 speakers and an in dash CD changer.

A 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine that produces 143 horsepower is the only available engine for all SX4 models. A 5 speed manual transmission is standard and a 4 speed automatic is optional. EPA ratings for the Hatchback are below average for a compact car, with ratings of 21 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway regardless of transmission. The Sedan fairs slightly better, but still under par, with ratings of 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the automatic transmission and 23 mpg city and 30 mpg with the manual.

The low price, simply outfitted yet functional and roomy interior and standard all wheel drive make the 2008 Suzuki SX4 Hatchback worthy of consideration. The 60/40 split rear seat has a fold down seat back and tumble forward motion that opens up a spacious 38 cubic feet of cargo room. Both the Hatchback and the Sport Sedan are especially accommodating to taller drivers that need extra head room. Justifying the purchase of the Sport Sedan is a little harder. It does handle a little better than the Hatchback, but aside from a larger trunk (which is an above average 14 cubic feet), there are no outstanding features to distinguish it from the vast number of other economy cars that tend to provide better gas mileage and more comfort and convenience features.
