Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester was introduced in the United States for the 1998 model year. A combination of the attributes of a passenger car and an SUV, the Forester was based on the Impreza wagon platform with a raised roofline and a slightly longer and wider wheelbase. The result was a 5 door, 5 passenger vehicle with a truck like appearance and increased utility. It has been said that the Forester was actually one of the pioneers of what is known today as the cross over sport utility vehicle market. The Base, L and S models were all powered by a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine, which could also be found in the Legacy. As with all Subaru vehicles, full time all wheel drive was standard as was a 5 speed manual transmission, while a 4 speed automatic was optional. Standard features included a split folding rear seat and air conditioning, and the S and L models included antilock brakes. The top of the line S model also featured an upgraded interior, larger tires and wheels and an attractive chrome grille. Although the Forester was not intended for serious towing or off road activity, it did have a towing capacity of 2000 lbs.

In 1999, changes were made to the transmissions in order to provide quicker and smoother shifting. The Base model was dropped in 2000 and a minor redesign in 2001 changed the shape of the headlight clusters, bumpers and taillights. In 2002, a new OV Premium Options Package for the S model added a sunroof, front side airbags and distinctive alloy wheels and an OK Options Package included all these features plus leather upholstery.

The 2003 model year marked the introduction of the second generation of Forester. Although the outward appearance did not seem very different from that of the previous model year, the chassis was revised and passenger and cargo space was notably increased, though remarkably exterior dimensions remained the same. The two available trim levels were the base X and the upscale XS. In 2004 turbocharged XT model joined the lineup, featuring many of the same comfort and convenience options found in the XS yet boasting 210 horsepower as opposed to 165. The XS L.L. Bean model was introduced in 2005 and included a vast array of interior and exterior enhancements in addition to a self leveling rear suspension system. Horsepower was increased across the board for the 2006 model year due to a new variable valve lift system and both the automatic and manual transmissions and the suspension system were updated to improve performance. Dedication to excellence and continuous improvement helped the Forester earn recognition as Car and Driver Magazine's Best Small SUV for the 2004, 2005 and 2006 model year.

Technological enhancements were added for the 2007 model year, including an upgraded audio system that features satellite radio compatibility, CD/MP3 player, and auxiliary jack. Whether driving the X or the richly equipped and powerful XT Limited, the Subaru Forester is one of the safest, most practical and enjoyable vehicles on the road.
