Saturn Sky

Call it a roadster, call it a convertible or call it a ragtop-whatever you call it, the Saturn Sky is a two-seater that is as fun to drive with the top up as it is down and definitely designed to turn heads. This car debuted in 2006 for the 2007 model year and Saturn enthusiasts could not have been happier. For years the convertible marketplace has been primarily dominated by Japanese and European car manufacturers and it was somewhat of a bold move for a relatively new car manufacturer to enter this marketplace. Priced lower than the competition from overseas and most of the U.S. convertibles too, the Sky was based on a corporate General Motors platform with longitudinal rails that were inspired by the incomparable Chevrolet Corvette.

The exterior is visually striking and the front end immediately catches the eye of admiring onlookers. Looking at the car head on, the upswept grill elements combined with its enclosed projector beam headlight clusters give the car the appearance that it is actually smiling at you. My guess is if you look at the driver you'll see a smile there too! The distinctive belt line carries the eye to the rear of the vehicle, which is somewhat angular in design and just as prominent as the front end.

Underneath the front hinged hood of the base model, you will find a 2.4 liter inline 4 cylinder engine that delivers 177 horsepower. The only other trim level is the Sky Red Line which is mostly identical to the base model with the exception of the seriously entertaining turbocharged 2.0 liter engine with direct injection that boasts 260 horsepower and goes from 0-60 in only 5.5 seconds. Power is transmitted to the engine through either a standard 5 speed manual or an optional 5 speed automatic transmission. Quick and responsive steering lends to the thrill of the interactive and engaging driving experience. 18 inch wheels and low profile performance tires help to deliver a smooth ride. Acceleration is good too, but of course the Sky Red Line is the more powerful choice.

The soft cloth drop top and glass rear window are both manually operated but it goes up and down quickly and effortlessly and it really is easy enough to do. Inside, this sexy machine features a wrap around dash, comfortable sport seats and functional components that are easy on the eye and user friendly. Standard equipment includes power accessories, air conditioning and a 6 speaker audio system with CD player. Options include an MP3 and satellite radio upgrade, leather trim and steering wheel mounted audio controls. The Red Line has a few more standard features to maximize traction and improve handling including a sport tuned suspension, limited slip rear differential and stability control.

If there is anything negative to say about the Saturn Sky it would definitely be in terms of the interior space and trunk space-or lack thereof. It is the nature of the beast to have limited trunk and interior space, and those who purchase convertibles don't typically purchase them due to their exceptional cargo and passenger space, but the Sky has a less than average amount of space available in the trunk, especially when the top is stowed, and both driver and passenger could use a little more wiggle room too. However, if you are looking for a distinctive lightweight convertible with an expressive style and comfort too, this is one very worthy roadster.
