The 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt is offered in eight trims (both two and four door) with an MSRP range of $13,710 to $18,910. (Don't look for an SS or SS Supercharged this year.) All models under the Sport Sedan and Sport Coupe are equipped with a 2.2-liter I4 producing 148 horsepower. The sport models have a 2.4-liter, 171 hp, I4.

Reviewers agree that for a small car the Cobalt offers an unusually quiet drive in a refined package with strong, smooth handling characteristics. Largely a carryover from the 2007 model year, the Cobalt achieved an NHTSA crash rating of four stars for the driver and five for the front passenger.

The Performance Appearance Package, an option on the 2LT models, adds a rear spoiler, stainless exhaust with chrome tips, aluminum wheels (16-inch), fog lamps, gauges with white faces, and leather wrapping on the steering wheel and shift knob. All Cobalt trim levels have systems for monitoring tire pressure with StabiliTrak for stability control a standard feature on the 2LT and Sport models. A full array of air bags including those in the head-curtain side position are standard across the line. The OnStar system is included on the 2LT and Sport and is an option on the 1LT.

Inside look for air conditioning standard as well as an electric defogger on the rear window. You get an AM/FM/CD/MP3 combo with an input jack, driver information center, and XM Satellite Radio included. The rear seat folds on the 60/40 model and provides access to the trunk. The steering wheel (three-spoke) is height adjustable. There are four cupholders in a center console and the center armrest pivots. The glove compartment is an unusually large bin augmenting the interior storage already offered by the console. The use of acoustic materials throughout the interior significantly improves noise handling.

Overall the Cobalt is a small five-passenger vehicle available as both a sedan and coupe that emphasizes interior comfort and quality materials throughout. With good power, excellent handling, and a sporty appearance, the Cobalt is highly popular in its genre and is a solid performer.
