The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee promises to remain one of the top-selling mid-sized SUVs for the coming model year and is still one of the few vehicles in its class that can be outfitted with a diesel engine.

On the outside there are few changes over last year. The grille and headlights have been restyled, but only a purist would immediately recognize the difference. New options include 18" chrome wheels and high-intensity-discharge headlights. Inside look for slight differences in trim, especially on the door panels, console, and dash. Buyers who opt for the Overland trim package will get a steering-wheel rim in wood and leather upholstery with unique piping. In basic appearance inside and out, however, the two models years are nearly indistinguishable without a side-by-side comparison.

The real changes are in entertainment options and what's under the hood. The Grand Cherokee offers a number of engine options from a 3.7-liter V6 to a 3-liter diesel V6. This year, however, the 4.7-liter V8 has been beefed up with a greater compression ratio and an all-new induction system. The result is horsepower output of 305 with 334 lb-ft. of torque. (All engines come with a five-speed automatic and both 2WD and 4WD configurations are available.)

A new option for 2008 is the Sirius Backseat TV system that includes two roof antennas and a satellite video receiver to pipe in Nickelodeon, Disney, and the Cartoon Network. There's a rear video screen and shows also appear on the screen of the optional MyGIG navigation radio, but only when the vehicle is in "park." (The MyGig system comes with a 20gb hard drive for storing photos and music and includes GPS navigation.)

In addition to the standard array of airbags, look for anti-lock brakes (all disc), electronic stability control, Hill Descent Control, and Hill Start Assist. Both a rear view camera and rear parking sensors are on the list of options. Fuel economy on the model isn't great, anywhere from 11 to 18 around town and 14 to 23 on the highway. The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee carries an MSRP range of $28,520 to $43,400 and gets high marks for safety, comfort, and power.
