The latest model in the second generation of this truck, the 2008 Toyota Tacoma, named after a Native American word for Washington's Mount Rainier has very little separating it from last years model. Critics, in fact, joke that there is "nothing new except the price tag."
The 2008 Tacoma comes in regular cab, access cab, and double cab version, each of which has a 4x2 and 4x4 option as well as a trimmed out Pre-runner model. As well, there is an X-runner version of the access cab truck that adds a few features that are otherwise available only as options. The standard engine is a 2.7 liter, 159 horsepower four cylinder engine that provides 180 pounds-feet of torque. There is also a 4.0 liter, 236 horsepower V-6 engine that pushes 266 pounds-feet of torque. The latter is standard on double cab models and the X-runner, and available as an option on the access cab Pre-runner. The standard transmission is a 5-speed manual with the smaller engines, 6-speed with the larger . 4- and 5- speed automatic transmissions are optional depending on the truck chosen, with the latter being a standard offering on the double-cab trucks.
Tires on the 2008 Toyota Tacoma are defaulted at 15 inches, with 16-inch rims available on the Pre-runner and 4x4 models, and other standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes, variable windshield wipers, and a composite truck bed that is built in Mexico, while the trucks themselves are assembled in Fremont, CA. The Tacoma's towing capacity is 3500 pounds, but the double cab can manage 6500 with an enhanced tow package.
Inside the cab of the Tacoma, there are airbags for the driver and front passenger, and those cabs with a back-seat feature a 60/40 folding seat back for it. A basic AM/FM radio/CD player is included, but upgrades included six speakers, and/or a JBL-designed system. One flaw of the Tacoma, however, is that even the double cab's back seat is not designed to hold adults comfortably - space is at a premium.
Industry experts have commented favorably about the 2008 Toyota Tacoma's car-like handling, smooth drive, and quick response. Fuel efficiency varies depending on the combination of engine and transmission, but generally ranges from 17 - 20 mpg in the city and 22 - 25 on the highway with the four-cylinder engine, and 15 - 16 mpg in the city / 18 - 20 on open road with the V-6.
